Root powder versus powdered extract

Valerian root powder is produced by drying and finely grinding the whole root. It contains the root's naturally occurring components and is not a concentrated extract.

A powdered extract is made by extracting selected compounds from the root with water, alcohol or another suitable solvent. The liquid is then filtered and dried into a concentrated powder. A product should only be described as an “extract” if the extraction method and extract ratio are known.
